CHICAGO – Thanks to advocacy from State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes, three adult and family literacy programs in Chicago and Cicero will receive $244,400 in grant funding to support community efforts to improve English literacy.
“Literacy and adult education programs can be transformative tools for professional development,” said Cervantes (D-Chicago). “This funding will enrich ongoing programs in our community so that more people are able to access these high-quality resources, leading to their future success. I am excited to see how this will improve the lives of my constituents.”
The grants, awarded by Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, included nearly $18 million for library services and $6.7 million for literacy programs throughout the state. Several organizations and schools in the district Cervantes represents received funding to enhance literacy programs that promote basic reading, math, writing and English language skills, including:
- Arab American Action Network: $52,000
- Poder Learning Center: $88,400
- Morton College: $104,000
“Providing our libraries – the cornerstones of our communities – with the support necessary to expand their services and programs is vital to ensuring that all Illinoisans are empowered to learn, grow and explore, regardless of where they live, their physical abilities, financial situation or educational background,” said Giannoulias. “At the same time, raising literacy rates across the state opens doors for personal development and contributes to the strength and advancement of our communities.”
“I want my constituents to succeed, personally and professionally,” said Cervantes. “Our community’s literacy programs are pathways to expedite their success.”
