State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes speaks on the Senate floorCHICAGO – State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes announced that Cicero will receive $270,860 through Illinois’ Safe Routes to School program to improve pedestrian safety and expand opportunities for children and families to safely walk and bike in their communities.

“Students and their families deserve peace of mind that getting to and from school isn’t dangerous,” said Cervantes (D-Chicago). “The investments in this infrastructure are an investment in our children’s safety.”

The following projects in the 1st District received funding:

  • $219,560 for the Town of Cicero to build a raised intersection, ADA-compliant ramps and thermoplastic pavement markings.
  • $51,300 for the Town of Cicero to host a bike rodeo and safety education events.

The Safe Routes to School program is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation using federal funding to improve safety and encourage walking, biking and rolling to school. Projects funded through the program include sidewalk improvements, traffic safety measures, public education efforts and community outreach initiatives.
