State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes on the Senate floorCHICAGO – State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship:

“For generations, people born or naturalized in this country have received legal status as U.S. citizens, and that right should not be threatened. Immigrants founded this country, and they continue to contribute in making America a better place — which is why I am pleased the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship.

“Had the Supreme Court overturned birthright citizenship, millions of people across the U.S. would have had their life that they know ripped from them. People come to the United States in search of a better life – not only for themselves, but also for their future generations. They work hard to achieve this goal, struggling themselves so their children and grandchildren can thrive. This decision by the Supreme Court is one that will allow families to continue to live out their version of the American Dream.”
